Greatest Luso - Brazilian Ever related to KNDNumbuh8(Numbuh8) - Alphonsus de Guimaraens (Alphonso Henriques de Guimaraens - Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais State, July 24, 1870 - Mariana, July 15, 1921):

Alphonsus de Guimaraens' poetry is markedly mystical end involved with catholic religiosity, his Sonnets preent a classical structure, and are profoundly religious and sensible on the way he explores the feelings of death, impossible love, loneliness and inadaptation to the world

howewer, the mystical tone impresses in his work a feeling of acceptation and resignation before life itself, of feelings and pains. other marking characteristic of his work is the utilizatin of spirituality related to the feminine picture that is considered an angel, or a celestial being, because of that, Alphonsus de Guimaraens is neo-romântic and symbolist at the same time, once those literary school have similar characteristics.


His work, predominantly poetic, consecrated him as one of Brazil's main symbolist authors. in reference to the city where he spent a part of his life, he is called "the Bachelor of Mariana", his "ivory tower of the symbolism".

His poetry is almost turned to the theme of the death of the beloved wife. Although he was a favorite of the heroic verse (10 Metrical Syllables), he also explored other metrics, particularly the REDONDILHA MAIOR (7 Metrical Syllables).

The son of Albino da Costa Guimarães, a Portuguese businessman, and Francisca de Paula Guimarães Alvim, the niece of poet Bernardo de Guimarães.

Alphonsus Guimaraens enrolled in 1887 on the engineering course. A marking fact in his life was the premature loss of his cousin and Fianceé Constança, and the young woman's death troubled him morally and physically.

He went in 1891, to São Paulo, where he enrolls on the Law Course of the FACULDADE DO LARGO SÃO FRANCISCO(Saint Francis' Square College), came back to Minas Gerais e graduated in Law in 1894, on the newly inaugurated FACULDADE LIVRE DE DIREITO DE MINAS GERAIS(Free Law College of Minas Gerais), where on the epoch worked at Ouro Preto. After being admitted to the bar, at São Paulo, he collaborated on the press and frequented VILA KYRIAL, owned by José de Freitas Vale, where young symbolist poets would meet. In 1895, At Rio de Janeiro, he met Cruz e Souza, a poet he already admired and the two became persoal friends. He was also Substitute Justice and prosecutor at Conceição do Serro (MG). In 1897, he marries Zenaide de Oliveira. Two years later, in 1899, he debuted on the literature with two volumes of verses: SEPTENÁRIO DAS DORES DE NOSSA SENHORA (Septenary of the Pains of Our Lady) e CAMARA ARDENTE (The Ardent Chamber), e DONA MÍSTICA (Lady Mystical); both of nitid symbolist inspiration.

In 1900 he passed to perform the function of journalist collaborating With "A Gazeta", of São Paulo. In 1902 he published Kyriale, under the pseudonym ALPHONSUS DE GUIMARAENS; this work projected him on the literary universe, then obtaining a recognition, although restricted, of some rare cryticals and close friends. In 1903, the positions of Substitute Justices were supressed by the State Government. As a consequence of this, Alphonsus also lost his position as a Justice, a fact that led him to great financial difficulties.

After refusing a better post at "A Gazeta", Alphonsus was nominated to the direction of the Political Newspaper "Conceição do Serro", where his brother, the poet Archangelus de Guimaraens, Cruz e Souza e José Severino de Resende would also collaborate. In 1906, he became Municipal Justice of Mariana (a city near Ouro Preto) a position he would perform for the rest of his peaceful life. In 1909, he is elected a member of the ACADEMIA MINEIRA DE LETRAS(Minas Gerais Academy of Letters), occupying the chair Number Three.

He lived his last years on the obscurity besides his beloved wife Zenaide de Oliveira, with whom he had 15 children, two of whom were also writers: João Alphonsus e Alphonsus Guimaraens Filho.

Because of the period where he lived in Mariana, he was known as "The Bachelor of Mariana", despite living there with his wife and his 15 children. The nickname was given to him because of the state of complete isolation he lived. His life on that epoch, was dedicated basically to his activities as a Justice and the elaboration of his poetic work, notably ISMALIA(Ismalia), published in 1920, and PASTORAL AOS CRENTES DO AMOR E DA MORTE(Pastoral Letter to the Believers of Love and Death), Published Posthumously in 1923. He died peacefully in Mariana, in July 15, 1921.
